Howell Nature Center's Woody the Woodchuck contradicts Punxsutawney Phil, calls for early spring

HOWELL (WWJ) - Not long after Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, Howell Nature Center's Woody the Woodchuck had a more promising outlook on Thursday morning.

The female critter, dubbed "Michigan's Official Groundhog," emerged from her home around 8:30 a.m. to a crowd hoping to hear good news. She took a look around a couple of times before she made her official prediction.

"Looks like we've got spring!" officials said excitedly to the crowd bundled up in hats, gloves and heavy winter jackets as the groundhog did not see her shadow.

Woody's prediction may be a relief for some as an Artic blast brought morning temperatures down to 20° and wind chills dipped into the low teens in Livingston County.

Organizers at the nature center say Woody is right about 75% of the time.

Thursday's gathering celebrated Woody's 25th annual Groundhog's Day prediction at the center located at 1005 Triangle Lake Rd.

Her Pennsylvania counterpart, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow earlier in the morning, calling for six more weeks of winter.
