Drivers on southbound I-75 Thursday morning encountered an unwelcome sight: Miles of red brake lights.
The roadway was a sea of stopped cars after a tree trimming truck struck an overpass south of 7 Mile yesterday afternoon ,flipped over and broke the bridge.
Drivers have to exit at 7 Mile ... which means a long line of cars trying to get off the freeway during heavily traveled commute times.
So, what to do? "If you see traffic lights,make a detour immediately," a driver named Christopher Robbinson advised WWJ's Charlie Langton. Robbinson said the detour cost him 20 minutes and made him late to work. He had to run to punch in.
"It was bad, really, really bad," Robbinson said.
As much of a hassle as it is, there's one bright spot: Lots of visitors to National Bakery on State Fair, which is one of the detour roads. "We have great doughnuts, coffee, bread, the best stuff you can ever image, you can find it," the owner of the 45-year-old bakery told Langton.
Chuck Chaney told Langton he understood that he just had to accept the detour that took him 20 miles out of his way and cost extra money in gas. What else is there to do?
Meanwhile,road crews worked into the night on bridge repairs but there's no word on when the area will reopen.
