(WWJ) A truck hit and damaged an overpass Wednesday afternoon, along southbound I-75 at Nevada in Detroit.

As a result, the Michigan Department of Transportation shut down all southbound lanes of the freeway, from 7 Mile Rd. to McNichols.

There is some damage, MDOT spokeswoman Cross said, and crews have determined the bridge needs immediate repairs.

"Our bridge inspectors are currently looking at the bridge, and our maintenance folks, to determine the safety of the bridge," she told WWJ's Sandra McNeill, a little after 5 p.m. "They are going to go up top and also block one lane of that crossover bridge at Oakland, to keep traffic off onto just one lane, to keep weight off the side that got hit."

Traffic was backed up a couple of miles on the freeway, as the Wednesday afternoon commute began.

Early in the evening, there was no known reopening time.

"We're gonna get the crash cleared up and then bridge crews to come in and do repairs," Cross said. "We're not sure how long it's gonna be closed. We're gonna hope for morning rush hour, but it's very possible that we could be in mid-morning tomorrow (Thursday) before we can reopen."

Alternate routes could include the I-75 Service Drive, Woodward Ave., I-94, or the Lodge Freeway, depending on your destination.
