MILFORD (WWJ) – Many Metro Detroit drivers will have quite the traffic headache to deal with Thursday morning and over the weekend.

As MDOT continues work on the I-96 Flex Route project in western Oakland County, a portion of the freeway will be down to one lane on Thursday.

Starting at 9 a.m. Thursday, the eastbound side of the freeway will be down to one lane from South Hill Road to Old Plank Road for guard rail repairs. Traffic is expected to get back to normal at 3 p.m.

All EB lanes of I-96 are then scheduled to be closed from 5-8 a.m. on Saturday between Milford and Wixom Roads for overhead sign installation. Traffic will be detoured via southbound Milford to EB Grand River Avenue, then north on Wixom Road back to the freeway.

In addition to Saturday's closure, the freeway will have a traffic shift from Beck Road to I-275 from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, with the right lane closed.

The following ramps will also be closed:

• The eastbound I-96 ramps to Milford Road, Wixom Road, and southbound I-275/M-5.
• The Milford Road ramps to eastbound I-96.

Local traffic can use Wixom Road to re-enter eastbound I-96.

More information on the I-96 Flex Route project can be found on the MDOT website.
