INKSTER (WWJ) -- The Inkster Police Department is seeking to put an end to false rumors being spread on social media about an attempted child abduction near a local school.

In a public message shared Wednesday, the Inkster Police Department said it is aware of a social media post circulating regarding an alleged attempted child abduction near Inkster Preparatory Academy.

"At this time, we want to make it clear that this information is FALSE and has not been confirmed by the Inkster Police Department. There have been no verified reports of an attempted child abduction matching the claims being shared online. We understand posts like this can cause fear and concern within our community, especially for parents and students, but we ask residents to avoid spreading unverified information."

The Inkster PD said it encourages the public to rely on official department communications for accurate and up-to-date information regarding public safety matters.

After that release, officers received a call about an abduction in progress.

There was a large police presence and the department treated the call as a real emergency.

Investigators determined the call was a deliberate prank made by teens.

Officials say calls like that are not harmless pranks and ask parents to talk to their kids about the seriousness of the misuse of emergency services.

As always, anyone who does witness suspicious activity or has concerns is asked to call police directly. The non-emergency number is 313-563-9850. (In an emergency, always dial 911).

Police added. "We appreciate the community’s cooperation in helping prevent the spread of misinformation."
