DETROIT (WWJ) -- A historic church went up in flames, early Tuesday morning on Detroit's west side.
Firefighters responded in the pre-dawn hours to St. Agnes Church, on Rosa Parks near W. Grand Boulevard, but the fire had already caused significant damage.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Jon Hewett reported flames could be seen shooting out of the roof of the abandoned building, which was sold nearly 20 years ago. "The south side of the building was completely engulfed in flames," Hewett said, "and by morning light the damage becoming more visible after crews had left."
Within the past few years there has been talk about renovating the century-old building for possible use as apartments.

Speaking to Hewett at the scene, John — who introduced himself as a Catholic church historian — said it's possible that the church could still be salvaged.
"The roof isn't great, it needs to be replaced, but the interior is mostly steel, concrete...it's not going anywhere," he said. "You know, even if the roof had to come off, it's still relatively sound inside."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
There were no injuries reported.
