LANSING (WWJ) - Attorneys General across the U.S. are looking into whether a popular social media site is negatively impacting the mental and physical health of youth in America.

Michigan's own Dana Nessel announced on Thursday that she is joining the investigation into whether Tik Tok violated state consumer protection laws, therefore putting users at risk.

A statement released by Nessel said Tik Tok uses targeted promotion tactics to lure children into using their app, even though there are known risks. The investigation will probe into the company's techniques at boosting engagement with kids, to include increasing how long and how much young users were on the platform.

Nessel has long been outspoken about how social media platforms can negatively impact young Michiganders, previously joining a bipartisan coalition in May of last year to stop Facebook from launching a version of Instagram aimed at users 13 and under.

Nessel is also part of another nationwide investigation launched in Nov, 2021 into Meta Platforms. Inc. — previously known as Facebook — for promoting Facebook and Instagram to children.

“Recent reports on social media’s impact on the mental and physical health of young people raise serious questions among attorneys general across the nation. Ultimately, we are concerned about protecting our youth,” Nessel said.

“I am proud to join my colleagues in this investigation. Given this is an ongoing investigation, I will not be discussing any details beyond this announcement.”

The nationwide investigation includes Attorneys General from across the nation, to include California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, Tennessee, Vermont and more.
