(WWJ) The Associated Press has projected U.S. Rep. John James as the winner of the Republican primary for governor of Michigan.
James, a West Point graduate, combat veteran, and supply chain executive backed by President Donald Trump, defeated primary opponent Perry Johnson, a self-funded businessman and auto industry quality expert who invested millions of his personal fortune into the race.

James will advance to the November general election, setting up a high-stakes fall matchup against Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. Benson secured the Democratic nomination after defeating Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in Tuesday's primary.
The open-seat race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is expected to be one of the most competitive gubernatorial contests in the nation.
If you noticed that lines at your precinct were short, keep in mind that more than a million Michiganders already voted.
The Secretary of State's Office says 1.2 million voters cast absentee ballots and took advantage of early, in-person voting. The 138,000 people who voted in-person over the past week-and-a-half was nearly double the number from four years ago.
