(WWJ) Wayne County residents take note! A new survey is in the mail to 100,000 households seeking information that could eventually lead to jury duty in a courtroom near you.

The mailer is coming courtesy of Wayne County's Third Circuit Court and includes a questionnaire that helps the court sort through potential jurors for cases in the coming year.

"The purpose of the questionnaire is to determine qualifications for jury service for our District Courts," Yvette Blackmon, Director of Jury Services for Wayne County's Third Circuit, told WWJ's Jon Hewett.  "And so if you qualify for jury service then you may receive a summons throughout the year.  It is a required document so if you do receive a questionnaire, jurors are required to submit that document back within ten days of receipt."

Blackmon says this process is not new.  Michigan’s State Court Administrative Office requires that the Third Circuit Court mail questionnaires to residents on behalf of county-wide district courts.

"Anyone who has a drivers license or state ID and is over the age of 18 can receive a questionnaire," Blackmon said.

It should take about ten minutes to fill out.

"There are nine questions on the questionnaire and then there is the backside of it which is the juror personal history questionnaire that has 17 questions," Blackmon stated.

For those who don't respond, there could be consequences, but that would be left up to the court.

Residents who receive the document are eligible for a potential jury summons between September 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026.

"We do rely on our jurors to ensure that our justice system runs properly," Blackmon added.

The questionnaires are going out this month, which is Juror Appreciation Month.

"I really, really would like to say that I appreciate all of the jurors that serve within our court throughout the entire year," Blackmon said.

To make it easier to fill out, people can scan a QR code and fill out the information on their phone.
