BATTLE CREEK (WWJ) -- Kellogg Company employees in Michigan and three other states are on strike after their contract expired at midnight on Tuesday.
The workers are members of the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union.
Brian Leche is an electrician at Kellogg’s Battle Creek location, and told WWJ that the strike has been enacted to ensure a better future for workers at the company.
Leche says many factory employees work long hours, and go months without a scheduled day off.
“They work eight days a week, at least, and that’s months on end without a scheduled day off,” Leche said. “Some people in the plant don’t have a scheduled day off for the entire year. So we’re not willing to accept that anymore.”
Union leaders say they have been in talks with the cereal maker for weeks, and are focused on a fair contract with a better living wage and benefits.
Employee walk-outs are also expected at the Kellogg locations in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Memphis, Tennessee, and Omaha, Nebraska.
