SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Two young children are being praised for alerting family members after they found their father and his two friends unresponsive from a suspected drug overdose at their Southfield home.

The Southfield Police Department said the father, identified as a 34-year-old man, was given Narcan and remains in critical condition while his two friends, identified as brothers ages 37 and 39, tragically died in the incident on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

According to police, the two children -- ages five and seven -- came across the scene in their home at an apartment complex off 8 Mile near Beech Daly in Southfield and immediately called their grandmother on Facetime.

The grandmother then called 911.

"I want to commend those children (who had) the courage and the forethought to take action," said Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren told FOX 2.

The chief said that the case is the city's first fatal overdose in about a year and a half.

"This is very concerning because the question we have to ask ourselves is – this batch of dope if you will – 'where is it at and who may also be victims to this?'" Barren said.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is now assisting the investigation by tracing where the men got their batch of drugs from.

"Right now we believe that there is a deadly batch out there in the community," he added.
