DETROIT (WWJ) -- After being shutdown for more than a month due to health code violations, Lafayette Coney Island in downtown Detroit is expected to reopen on Saturday.
According to the City of Detroit Public Health Department, a team of inspectors visited the restaurant on Friday and gave it a passing grade.
Lafayette Coney Island was forcibly closed by a cease and desist in September after the health department received complaints of rats -- along with viral videos of those rats.
"It's our job to protect Detroiters, and we want to make sure that all restaurants are serviing food in a safe and healthy environment," said Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo, "and so that's what we've done."
The cease and desist order required the restaurant to close for thirty days.
During that time, management was told to patch holes in the walls and thoroughly clean the kitchen and dining room.
According to Fair Razo, the health department worked closely with Lafayette's owners to bring the landmark restaurant back into compliance.
With no further evidence of rodents or rodent droppings, Fair Razo said, "We are pleased to reopen them."
