DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 50-year-old man has been arrested after he crashed into the back of a Michigan State Police car, early Friday morning along I-96.
According to Michigan State Police, troopers were shutting down westbound lanes of I-96 near Wyoming in Detroit, due to a rollover crash, when the driver of a GMC Acadia SUV rear-ended an MSP vehicle.
The GMC driver then drove away, police said.
MSP was able to use license plate readers in the area to identify the driver, who lives in Lincoln Park.
Troopers tracked him down a short time later, near his home, and made a traffic stop.
During the roadside interview it was determined this was the vehicle driver that fled, police said.
The man was arrested for suspected drunk driving and fleeing the scene of a crash.
MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said, in a statement: “This was excellent work by troopers using LPR’s to locate this driver and get him off the road before he hurt someone. Fortunately, the trooper was not hurt in the crash and again there is never a reason to drive impaired. Ever.”
The man's name was not immediately released.
