FOWLERVILLE (WWJ) - Deputies in Livingston County issued a stern warning on Wednesday after a "wild call" about a suspected live explosive from WWII prompted the state police bomb squad to descend on a local home and nearby schools to shelter in place.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office said a Fowlerville man contacted 911 around noon on December 6 with concerns about a World War II anti-aircraft munition he had in his possession.

"He said that he found the munition at a family member's home in Northern Michigan, didn't know if it was live, and had driven it back to his house before calling it in," the sheriff's office said.

Deputies swiftly responded to the man's home and secured the scene while the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called in to help assist with the explosive.

The investigation also caused students and staff at Fowlerville Schools to shelter-in-place out of an abundance of caution, authorities said.

When MSP arrived at the home, they determined the munition was not live.

After an hour, the lockdown on local schools was lifted and the sheriff's office said the incident serves as a reminder not to touch suspected explosives.

"If anyone, anywhere finds possible explosives, please call 911 IMMEDIATELY and DON'T HANDLE THE ITEM!" deputies said on social media. "We've got amazing professionals who can do that for you. Be safe out there, ok?"
