LIVONIA (WWJ) -- A boil water alert that had been in affect for a majority of Livonia residents since Wednesday had been lifted.

Livonia city officials said the alert — for a portion of the city, from Seven Mile Rd. south to Joy Rd., and Wayne Road east to Inkster Rd. — is no longer in affect as of Friday, June 21.

The reason for the alert: Low pressure was reported in the area for about 30 minutes Wednesday morning until about 9:10 a.m.

Officials say this water issue was caused by a "mechanical malfunction" in a pressure reducing valve, yet the cause of that malfunction is not yet known. A contractor was on the scene, evaluating the faulty valve.

According to the city, water samples taken by the Great Lakes Water Authority have since tested negative for contamination.

Impacted homes and businesses are being told to run cold water for at least a minute to quickly flush their pipes. After that, the water has been safe to use for cooking and to drink.
