LIVONIA (WWJ) -- Three suspects are in custody after a police incident shut down a section of I-96, near Livonia, during the Thursday morning commute.
It all unfolded at around 7:30 a.m. after Michigan State Police troopers on patrol in Detroit spotted a Chevy Cruz that has been reported stolen out of Dearborn.
When troopers followed the car westbound on I-96, Livonia police were called in to assist.
Several officers responded to the freeway, with one of them ultimately using a grappler device to bring the chase to an end near Farmington Road.
Officials said the suspect tried to break free from the device, but the car's rear axle was ripped off the vehicle.
No one was injured in the incident.
MSP said the driver, identified as a 27-year-old Brighton man, was arrested on charges of auto theft and a probation violation.
Two women in the car were also arrested after police said it was determined they had several warrants from different jurisdictions.
“We continue to use technology to find and stop criminals in our communities,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement. “Thanks to the Livonia Police Department and their grappler device, these suspects are now in jail without the need for a pursuit.”
The freeway was closed after the incident, causing big backups, but all lanes have since reopened.
