(WWJ) A nurse from Livonia is facing a criminal charge for the theft of two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at a clinic in Detroit.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday that 41-year-old Saeedeh Elahi is charged with one count of larceny in a building in connection with the alleged crime earlier this week.

According to Investigators, Elahi took two syringes filled with the Moderna vaccine and two vaccination cards while she was working at the vaccination drive-thru site at the TCF Center Monday afternoon.

Another worker who allegedly witnessed the theft alerted police, and Elahi was arrested at the scene.

It's not clear what Elahi planned to do with the doses.

"There is simply no excuse for this alleged conduct.," Worthy said, in a statement. "This past year has been extremely stressful for everyone. There is some light at the end of the tunnel because of the various vaccines. State and local governments have been doing their level best to get vaccines to as many people as possible. This case should send a loud and clear message that this conduct is criminal and will be taken seriously."

Elahi, who was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in 36th District Court, could face up to four years in prison if convicted.

Detroit leaders say no one who had an appointment missed out of the vaccine as a result of the alleged illegal activity.
