DEARBORN (WWJ) The Dearborn Fire Department is grieving one of their own.
"It is with heartfelt sorrow and regret that we announce the passing of Captain Jeremy Watkins, after a long and courageous battle with presumed occupational-related cancer," Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray wrote in a statement on social media.
According to Murray, Watkins served with the department for over twenty years (since March 2002) and rose through the ranks, becoming Captain in 2020.
"Jeremy was a proud Dearborn resident and believed it was an honor to serve the citizens of his hometown," Murray wrote. "Throughout his years of service, Jeremy responded to many emergencies and positively impacted the lives of thousands, often on the worst day of their lives."
In 2024, a presumed occupational-related cancer diagnosis forced Watkins into medical retirement; according to Murray.
"Never one to back down from a challenge…he took on cancer with the same bravery and courage that he had shown at the many fires he fought throughout his career," Murray wrote.
Murray said Watkins "fought…until the very end" with "his loving wife Christine by his side, along with the support of his brothers and sisters at the Dearborn Fire Department."
Watkins died on Sunday, March 2nd; the department said.
"Clearly Heaven was in need of a hero," Murray wrote.
His brothers and sisters at the Dearborn Fire Department would not let him travel his final journey alone.
Murray said Captain Watkins' fellow firefighters escorted him from his home to the funeral home, where they will "remain by his side until the completion of his services."
The department said they will announce visitation and funeral service information soon.
