ADRIAN (WWJ) - An "armed and dangerous" suspect wanted for attacking numerous people with a machete in Lenawee County was taken into police custody on Tuesday.
The Adrian Police Department announced that 41-year-old Jonathan Gregory was arrested around 6:15 p.m. on August 1. Officials said tips from the public led officers to a locations Gregory was known to frequent -- he was found and apprehended without incident.
The series of gruesome attacks allegedly committed by Gregory over the weekend sparked a manhunt with local authorities.
According to Adrian police, officers first received a report of two victims being hacked by a man with a machete on Saturday, July 29, and were dispatched to the 1200 block of North Main.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found two people with severe lacerations to their arms and hands. The pair were treated by police and fire personnel before taken to Hickman Hospital for further medical care.
Police canvassed the area, but were unable to find the suspect.
Officers said witnesses told them that they had seen the man, who entered a homeless camp in the woods near Dollar General. They claimed that the suspect began arguing with people in the camp and when he was asked to leave, he attacked a woman with a machete.
"When the male victim came to defend the female, he was also struck with the machete," police said. The suspect then fled the scene.
The suspect was identified as Jonathan Andrew Gregory, age 41. Police described Gregory as a Caucasian male, 5’7” tall, with brown eyes and a closely cropped or shaved head. Gregory was formerly a resident of Tecumseh, but is now homeless.
In the hunt for the 41-year-old, police said he was considered armed and dangerous and anyone who sees him should call 911 immediately.
After his arrest on Tuesday, Gregory was lodged at the Lenawee County Jail where he is currently awaiting arraignment on charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.
The police department said Gregory is likely to appear in 2-A District Court on Wednesday morning.
