MACKINAC COUNTY, MICH. (WWJ) A serious crash on the Mackinac Bridge left four people injured and one arrested, according to Michigan State Police (MSP).
MSP St. Ignace Post said the two-vehicle crash happened on Wednesday, September 23, at approximately 2:55 a.m., in a construction area on the bridge where traffic funnels into one lane.
Their preliminary investigation suggests multiple vehicles passed through the tollbooths on southbound I-75. As they exited the toll area, they "began driving recklessly at high rates of speed" and one driver eventually rear-ended another.
The impact left four people injured, two of them seriously so.
The other two injuries are not life-threatening, according to MSP.
All of them were treated at a local hospital.
Authorities closed the bridge while emergency workers responded and troopers conducted an investigation.
Troopers arrested the at-fault driver, a 28-year-old man from Jamaica, who works and lives seasonally in the area.
He's lodged at the Mackinac County Jail for Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment of a Body Function.
The Mackinac County Prosecutor is considering additional charges. Investigators believe alcohol and speed contributed to the crash.
