MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) — A 44-year-old father is facing multiple charges after a single-vehicle crash in Macomb Township last week left his child fighting for his life.

Michael Shaway of Macomb Twp. was arraigned Wednesday on one count of second-degree child abuse and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. on Friday Aug. 30 near the intersection of 21 Mile and Tilch Roads. Police officials said at the time a Ford F-150 left the road and went down an embankment.

His son, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was reportedly ejected from the truck. He was listed in “critical, yet stable condition” at Beaumont Royal Oak Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

Shaway was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities did not disclose the exact cause of the crash, but said Shaway was in possession of an undisclosed controlled substance. The crash remains under investigation.

Shaway’s bond was set at $50,000 cash/surety, no 10%. He remains in custody at the Macomb County Jail.
