DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Macomb man is facing murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and other charges in connection with a mass shooting, nearly two years ago in Detroit.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office on Friday announced the case against 32-year-old Jony Saad Alatto, in connection with the fatal shootings of John Coffie Jr., 76, Alphonso Henry, 55, and Morriss Campbell Jr., 41, and the non-fatal shootings of a 55-year-old woman and a 33-year-old woman, all of Detroit.
It happened the morning of August 6, 2022, at a home in 13800 block of Saratoga Street, in the area of 7 Mile Rd. and Gratiot Ave., on Detroit's east side.
Prosecutors say, at around 10:40 a.m., police responded to a call about gunfire to find one victim with a gunshot wound outside the house, which police described as a "known narcotics vacant location."
Officers then heard several people inside screaming and forced entry into the home, finding four more people with gunshot wounds.
Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other four were taken to a hospital. Henry succumbed to his injuries in the hospital later the day, authorities said, and Coffie died several days later.
It's allegedly, according to Prosecutor Kym Worthy, that Alatto showed up the house with a gun, shot all five of the victims, and then robbed the place.
Alatto fled the scene, and was not arrested until recently.
He has since been charged with the following: three counts of Felony Murder, two counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, five counts of Armed Robbery, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and 11 counts of Felony Firearm.
"Two years ago, a mass shooting took place in an alleged drug house. Five people were shot and three of them were fatalities," said Worthy, in a statement.
"This was difficult to put together but because of the consistent and diligent work of the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, I am able to announce charges today. I am confident that justice will prevail, and that this defendant will be held to account."
Alatto was arraigned in 36th District Court on Friday, May 24, 2024, and was remanded to jail without bond.
He will be back in court for a probable cause conference scheduled for June 7, to be followed by a preliminary exam which is set for June 14.
Alatto faces up to life in prison if convicted as charged in this case.
