(WWJ) Attention drivers: Some pretty big backups are expected when the next phase of a major road project begins Monday in Macomb County.
A stretch of Hall Road (M-59) between Gratiot Ave. (M-3) and Groesbeck Hwy. will be closed to through traffic for the rebuilding of the railroad crossing.
Hall Road will be closed for one week in each direction.
Drivers, meanwhile, will be able to access local businesses through temporary crossovers.
Bob Shay, a commuter who travels daily through the frequently congested area, says the upheaval is going to be painful.
"It hurts; I've seen it," he told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "All the major malls, all the major players, you know, Partridge Creek... It's a lot a traffic."
"But I don't have a solution, because the infrastructure does have to be changed."
Westbound M-59 will close at 7 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 4, and is expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11. The posted detour will be Northbound M-3, westbound 21 Mile Road, and southbound North Avenue back to westbound M-59.
Eastbound M-59 will close at 7 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, set to reopen at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25. The posted detour will be Northbound M-3, westbound 21 Mile Road, and southbound North Avenue back to westbound M-59.
This is part of a major rebuild of Hall Road that the Michigan Department of Transportation said would impact an estimated 90,000 drivers in metro Detroit.
When the first phase of the work began in the spring, MDOT warned residents and visitors to be prepared for trips through this area to take longer.
