SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) -- A Northern Michigan man is facing felony charges after it's alleged he abused a puppy in a parking lot in Metro Detroit, then obstructed officers who arrived to investigate.
Just before 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, the Macomb County Sheriff's Office responded to a fast food restaurant on Hall Road on a report of a dog being abused inside of a camper van.
A witness told deputies that he saw the suspect — later identified as a 25-year-old Corbin Miller from — Manistee, striking the puppy numerous times with a “cylindrical item.”
Deputies arrived to find Macomb County Animal Control already on the scene.
According to the sheriff's office, Miller, refused to comply with the deputies' requests to roll down his window, exit the van, or let Animal Control tend to the puppy.
When deputies eventually got into the camper, they found a 3-month-old German pointer mix named “Maeby" with visible injuries to her leg and yelping when picked up.
The sheriff's office said Miller "remained uncooperative" and was taken into custody.
He was arraigned in 41A District Court in Shelby Township on Wednesday on one count of killing or torturing an animal - third degree, a four-year felony; and two counts of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer, a two-year felony.
Miller's bond was set at $100,000 cash/surety, no 10%. He remained in the Macomb County Jail on Thursday.
As for Maeby, officials said she was badly injured but may recover.
According to the MCSO: "Animal Control Chief Randazzo advised that Maeby suffered a skull fracture, pelvic girdle fracture, and a femur fracture. As of this morning, she is stable and is in good spirits, awaiting possible surgery."
