TROY (WWJ) — A young West Michigan man is facing charges for allegedly slamming a pickup truck into a garage door in Metro Detroit while he was drunk.
Troy police officers were called to a home on Camden Drive — near Maple and Coolidge — just before 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13 after getting reports that a Chevy Silverado had driven into the garage door.
Troy officers responded to the home, but were unable to find the truck. Birmingham police, however, found the suspect a short time later near Coolidge and 14 Mile.
Troy police went to the scene and spoke with the 22-year-old driver from Rockford, just north of Grand Rapids.
While speaking with him, officers noticed his speech was slurred and his breath smelled like alcohol. After failing multiple field sobriety tests, the man was arrested and taken to the Troy Police Lock-Up, where he blew a .186% BAC on a chemical breath test.
During a search of the truck, officers found an open bottle of vodka on the passenger floorboard.
The man, whose name was not released, was charged with operating while intoxicated, open alcohol container in a vehicle and malicious destruction of a building $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.
Authorities did not disclose the extent of damage to the garage. It was not clear why the West Michigan man was in Troy or if he knew the homeowners of the garage he crashed into.
