DETROIT (WWJ) A 14-year-old girl drowned in the Detroit River, police said.
Detroit Police (DPD) said they received a call Saturday, June 27, around 8:30 p.m., about two girls struggling to swim.
They responded to Maheras-Gentry Park on the city's east side. Detroit Harbormasters and the Coast Guard pulled one of the girls from the water.
However, the other teen did not resurface, prompting officers to launch a rescue effort.
"Unfortunately, our rescue efforts turned into a recovery effort," Commander of DPD's Fifth Precinct Lawrence Purifoy said. "Her body was recovered, and unfortunately she is no longer with us."
The Detroit Police Department extended their condolences to the girl's family. The other teen is expected to be okay.
