AUGUSTA TWP. (WWJ) — A suspect is in custody after allegedly stealing packages from more than a dozen Washtenaw County homes on Monday.
Michigan State Police troopers with the Brighton Post were called to Augusta Township — southeast of Ann Arbor — around 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 24 after getting several complaints about packages being taken from porches.
After talking to numerous victims, troopers were able to determine the same person was responsible for each theft, all of which happened that morning within the same time frame, according to MSP.
Investigators were able to develop a description of the suspect and his vehicle after talking to victims and watching doorbell camera footage.
Troopers put out that information in hopes of tracking down the red Chrysler 200 seen at the victims’ homes. Later that day, a car with a driver matching the descriptions was spotted in Canton.
Troopers spoke with the 20-year-old Belleville man and a 17-year-old girl, also from Belleville, who was a passenger in the car. The suspect, whose name has not been released, admitted to stealing packages from approximately fifteen homes earlier that day, officials said.
When troopers searched his car they found more than 40 stolen items, along with several shipping boxes. Officials did not say what types of items were stolen.
He was arrested and taken to the Washtenaw County Jail on charges of larceny between $1,000-$20,000. The teen passenger was released on scene.
Police are still investigating and asking anyone who knows something about the alleged porch pirate’s crimes to call the MSP Brighton Post at 810-227-1051.
