JACKSON (WWJ) - Authorities in Jackson say they're searching for a man who allegedly beat a woman with a handgun after he pointed it at her face and it failed to fire early Wednesday morning.

The Jackson Police Department said they responded to a home in the 200 block of W. North Street in Jackson around 1:30 a.m. on June 7th after receiving a report of physical assault involving a weapon.

When police arrived at the scene, witnesses said there were several acquaintances of the residents at the home when a 35-year-old male suspect and another man got into an argument.

A woman at the home attempted to intervene, but she was hit by the suspect, police said. The 35-year-old then went to his car and came back with a handgun.

Witnesses told police that the suspect threatened the woman with the gun and then physically attacked her with it. The fight dropped to the ground, police said, where the suspect allegedly pulled the trigger multiple times, but it did not fire.

According to those at the scene, a man at the home got involved and was able to get the gun away from the suspect. The 35-year-old man went fled the scene, leaving the gun.

The victim sustained minor injuries from the encounter and police were able to recover the weapon used in the alleged attack. Officers searched for the man, but were unable to locate him.

The department said witnesses knew the suspect's identity and a warrant was requested by police for assault with intent to murder.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
