DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man faces murder and attempted murder charges after a fun summer gathering on the city's east side turned into a tragedy.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced the charges against 31-year-old Daiwan Lemane Hopson on Tuesday, in connection with the deadly attack at a pool party on the night of Aug. 9.
Detroit police said Hopson and got into an argument with a 40-year old man and ended up stabbing the victim several times in the backyard of a home in the 18500 block of Fleming Street, near 7 Mile Rd.
Hopson than allegedly went to the front yard and stabbed three people, including Martisha Payne of Detroit and Jakirea Williams of Chesterfield Township, and a 31-year-old man.
The men survived the stabbing, but both women died of their injuries.
Officials said Hopson fled the scene, but was arrested on Aug. 15 following a Detroit Police investigation.
"What started out as a friendly family and friends end of the summer gathering turned deadly with four people stabbed. Two succumbed to their injuries. A disagreement. A quick escalation. An introduction of a deadly weapon. And then multiple deaths. So senseless. So tragic. And so very violent," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy, in a statement.
Hopson remains held, awaiting an arraignment in 36th District Court on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to murder.
Michigan Department of Corrections records show he has a criminal history, having served prison time for a 2023 felony conviction for assault with intent to do great bodily harm by strangulation.
It appears he was out on parole at the time of the pool party incident.
