(WWJ) A Detroit man has been ordered held on a $750,000 bond, charged in the torture and assault of his pregnant girlfriend.
According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, it is alleged that, at around 8 p.m. on Oct. 16, Billy Ray Cromer, went to the home he shared with his girlfriend in the 8830 block of Rosemont in Detroit.
After having a discussion with his girlfriend, authorities say Cromer, 30, violently physically assault her -- grabbing he by the neck, choking her and repeatedly punching her in the stomach and the head.
During the assault the victim attempted to cover her stomach to protect her unborn child, Worthy's office said.
It's alleged that Cromer also made the 30-year-old woman swallow several unknown prescription medicine pills.
He eventually took her to a local hospital for treatment on the same evening.
The next day, it was learned that the unborn baby did not survive the assault. No further details are being released about that aspect of the case "because the homicide investigation into death of the infant is ongoing," prosecutors said.
Cromer was arraigned in 36th District Court Tuesday on charges of Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, Torture and Felonious Assault.
“This office has been presented with well over 30,000 domestic violence warrants in just the last five years. I can unequivocally say that alleged facts on this case are among the worst I have seen," Worthy said in a statement. "Domestic violence is ever present, it is tragic, it is real, it is tremendously disturbing, and it has to be taken much more seriously by society.”
If Cromer is able to post bond and is released, he cannot have contact with victim and must wear a GPS tether. He will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference is on Nov. 2.
