(WWJ) A Michigan man with alleged ties to ISIS has been charged in connection with a plan to carry out a mass-shooting at a U.S. military base in Metro Detroit.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, 19 year-old Ammar Mohamed Said from Melvindale planned the deadly attack at a the base in Warren, on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham terrorist group.
Said, a former Michigan Army National Guard member, was arrested on Tuesday.
A criminal complaint against Said states he is charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and distributing information related to a destructive device.
According to the complaint, Said told two undercover officers of his plan, which he intended to carry out on May 13 at the U.S. Army’s Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command (TACOM) facility at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren.
Last month, those officers told Said that they intended to help him carry out the attack and said Said gave them information on how to get into the base, trained them in how to use firearms and explosive devices, and gave them armor-piercing ammo and magazines.
“ISIS is a brutal terrorist organization which seeks to kill Americans. Helping ISIS or any other terrorist organization prepare or carry out acts of violence is not only a reprehensible crime – it is a threat to our entire nation and way of life,” said U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. for the Eastern District of Michigan. “Our office will not tolerate such crimes or threats, and we will use the full weight of the law against anyone who engages in terrorism.”
Said will make his initial court appearance on Wednesday.
He faces up to 20 years in prison for each count against him.
