(WWJ) A would-be bank robber was caught Bloomfield Township Tuesday, after crashing into the building.
Bloomfield Township Police responded at around 3 p.m. to a call from someone who heard gunfire outside the Level One Bank, at the corner of Maple and Telegraph Roads.
Officers arrived to find a SUV with heavy front-end damage, and the driver running away.
Police were quickly able to chase down arrest the man, identified as a 37-year-old Detroit resident, without incident.
According to investigators, the suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest, a gas mask, and a bulletproof hat.
Police said it is believed that man intentionally drove the SUV into the front of the bank. He then tried to pull away, but was unable to leave the parking lot due to the damage to his vehicle.
Police said there were no injuries to the public, the suspect or police.
The man's name was not immediately released, with expected charged pending.
Earlier, police alerted the public to heavy police presence in the area, but said there was no active risk to public safety. The scene has since been cleared.
The FBI is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
