DETROIT (WWJ) -- A manhunt is underway for a suspect in a shooting on Detroit's west side that left a 20-year-old man dead and his 9-year-old cousin critically injured.

Police received 18 ShotSpotter alerts around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, in a west side neighborhood around Outer Drive and Fenkell.

On the scene, officers found a man who had been fatally shot, and 9-year-old boy who was alone and badly hurt.

Police said boy told officers his first name and was rushed to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Ultimately, the child's mother was located and police learned that the boy was the cousin of the man who was killed.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said the shots were filed by a high-caliber weapon, with multiple rifle rounds found at the scene.

Bettison said the child remains hospitalized, but is expected to survive.

"We were alerted with out technology: ShotSpotter, our gun detection technology, because we didn't get a 911 call. This area, not a lot of folks over there," the chief said, updating reporters on the case, Thursday afternoon. "So, that allowed us to get there, and I do believe allowed us to get the child to the hospital, thus saving his life."

At this time, police aren't saying what may have led up to the gunfire, and no suspects have been named.

Bettison said investigators do believe they know who they're looking for, and federal authorities as assisting Detroit police with manhunt.

"I have very, very strong leads, and I think that I'll be doing a press conference within the next week, or even sooner than that, announcing an arrest," Bettison said.
