TRENTON (WWJ) -- A man is dead after an officer involved shooting early Wednesday morning at an apartment complex in Trenton.

The Michigan State Police Special Investigation Section has been called in to investigate the shooting that occurred around 2:45 a.m. at the Bristol Hills apartment complex on Van Horn Road.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reports a Trenton Police officer shot the 37-year-old suspect, who died outside of a Ford Edge that had a number of bullet holes on the side, and a shattered driver side window

Police said the suspect was wanted by police for a shooting in Inkster at around 2 a.m.

"Last night at approximately 2 a.m. our officers were made aware of a near- fatal shooting in the city of Inkster, from there we received a message from Inkster that the suspect vehicle was pinging in the 3700 block of Van Horn," Trenton Police Chief Mike Hawkins told Langton. "Our officers showed up on scene, located the suspect vehicle and encountered an armed subject at the vehicle."

Neighbors said crime or police activity at the complex is rare.

"I've never really had any problems out here until today," said Jay Dean, who lives at the apartments. "It's been pretty quiet for me, so it's kind of shocking to hear that."

No officers were injured.
