
MANISIQUE (WWJ) -- A 31-year-old man was killed while driving on an Upper Peninsula highway after a kayak rack slipped from the roof of another vehicle and came crashing through his windshield.
At around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Michigan State Police responded to a crash on M-28 near Manistique in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
A Chevrolet pickup was driving east on M-28 when a Honda passenger car carrying a kayak on a roof rack approached, heading west.
As the two vehicles passed each other, the kayak and roof rack came loose. They slid forward and pitched through the windshield of the pickup truck, injuring and killing the driver, 31-year old Matthew Morgrette of Colorado.'
Matthew's wife was sitting in the passenger seat and was not harmed.
After striking Matthew, the kayak and roof rack hit a third vehicle, causing only minor damages and no injuries.
The driver of the Honda was a 58-year-old Wisconsin man, who was also unscathed.
According to a press release from the MSP Negaunee Post, the crash remains under investigation and will be forwarded to the Schoolcraft County Prosecutor for review once completed.
State troopers were assisted by the Alger County Sheriff's Department, Seney County First Responders, and Alger County EMS. A portion on M-28 was closed during this investigation but has since reopened.
