DETROIT (WWJ) - One man is in custody following a dangerous gas station incident near downtown Detroit that saw response from not only police officers, but also the bomb squad on Monday night.

According to the Detroit Police Department, the bizarre incident unfolded sometime before 10 p.m. on June 19th at the Speedway gas station off East Jefferson Avenue and I-375 near downtown Detroit.

Officials said a man drove into the gas station, pulled up to a pump and got out of the car, but he caught the attention of the clerk after he allegedly set fire to some rags.

The clerk immediately grabbed a fire extinguisher and came outside, effectively putting out the blaze before dialing 911.

Detroit police, fire officials and even the bomb squad all responded to the scene. In addition to the rags, officials said there was a number of gas cans and propane tanks surrounding the man's car.

The man initially took off from the gas station, but returned later on. He was chased by authorities and eventually arrested just before 11 p.m.

The suspect's identity has not been released. Police had not yet said what led to or why the man ignited the rags. The incident remains under investigation.
