(WWJ) - A man is in custody after police say he led officers on a high speed chase in a stolen vehicle.

The white SUV, was seen by officers in Berkley allegedly driving over 90 miles per hour on Woodward near 12 Mile on Tuesday at approximately 1:45 a.m. The vehicle had reportedly been running red lights while driving through Royal Oak on Woodward.

The vehicle was reported stolen in Auburn Hills about 20 minutes before the incident with police, authorities said.

By the time the vehicle passed 11 Mile and drove under 696, it was traveling at around 100 miles per hour, according to police.

When police attempted to pull the vehicle over, “the driver of the vehicle engaged in evasive maneuvers, disregarding multiple red traffic signals before being intercepted in Pleasant Ridge,” according to a statement from the Berkley Department of Public Safety’s Facebook.

The vehicle stopped for a red light at Sylvan Avenue. Pleasant Ridge officers attempted to block the path of the vehicle, but the suspect allegedly tried to keep driving. Authorities said a “controlled contact” was used to stop the vehicle.

“The suspect, under the influence of alcohol and controlled substance, appeared oblivious to his potentially deadly actions,” the statement said.

The suspect is a 36-year-old man from Detroit.

“This event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers present at intersections, emphasizing the need for vigilance even in the presence of a green light,” the statement said.

Authorities say the requested charges include fleeing and eluding 3rd degree, operating while intoxicated, possession of a stolen vehicle, driving on a suspended license and possession of analogues (pills).

This is allegedly the 7th time the suspect has been arrested for operating while intoxicated.
