(WWJ) -- A tragic death on Mackinac Island is now believed to have been a suicide.

Mackinac Island Police say that a man, identified only as being in his early 40s, was found dead on Wednesday morning at the base of Arch Rock on the east side of the island.

Investigators now believe that the victim intentionally jumped from the top of Arch Rock, which stands about 146 feet above water.

His body was discovered several hours later by a passerby in an area that was off-limits to the public.

According to the victim's family, he had reportedly left a note that indicated his plans to take his own life.

“The men and women of the Mackinac Island Police Department offer our sincere condolences to the victim’s family as they face the difficult days ahead," Mackinac Island Police Chief Doug Topolski said in a statement.

The mother and father of the victim urged those who may be in crisis to seek counseling, or call the Upper Peninsula Suicide Prevention Coalition at 800-562-7622.

Police are not releasing the man's name at the request of his family.
