PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - A 46-year-old man is hospitalized after troopers discovered him slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle with a single gunshot wound on Wednesday morning in Plymouth.
Michigan State Police said they were alerted to the incident after someone dialed 911 and hung up in the area of M-14 near I-275 in Plymouth around 3 a.m. on April 3.
Troopers asked the Plymouth Police Department to perform a check of the freeway, in the event someone needed help.
MSP said Plymouth police came across a vehicle on a ramp in the westbound lanes of M-14 with a man slouched over the wheel. The vehicle was damaged, troopers added, having struck the I-275 bridge and came to rest on the north shoulder.
Further investigation revealed the victim, a 46-year-old man, had sustained a gunshot wound. A firearm was found in the vehicle along with a single shell casing.
The man was taken to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Troopers said there was no evidence of bullet holes anywhere in the vehicle and there were no obvious signs that a suspect was involved.
The freeway was closed case remains under investigation.
While troopers have not confirmed if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, authorities did urge residents to seek help if they feel the need to talk.
