ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) -- One person is dead and a suspected drunk driver is in police custody after a pair of crashes in St. Clair Shores Thursday night.
According to Michigan State Police, the driver got into a crash on westbound I-94 near 10 Mile Rd. at around 9:30 p.m., and then got out of his car on the left shoulder of the freeway.
That's when MSP said another driver lost control of his vehicle, went off onto the shoulder and hit the man. The man fell into the left lane of the freeway, police said, where he was hit by another car.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronoucned dead. He has since been identified as a 35-year-old Detroit resident.
The first driver that hit the man was arrested on suspicious of drunken driving, police said. Police said he is a 30-year-old Detroit man.
The second driver who hit the man stopped at the scene, spoke with investigators and was released.
Results of a blood test are pending, MSP said, as the investigation continues.
"It is important to remember to stay in your vehicle with your seat belt buckled. It is very dangerous to stand on the freeway," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement. "We are also reminding drivers to not get behind the wheel impaired. This crash was very preventable."
No names were released.
