MELVINDALE (WWJ) — One man is hospitalized and several others are in police custody after an officer-involved shooting in Melvindale early Sunday morning.
The shooting, which happened around 12:45 a.m. on Schaefer near I-75. is under investigation by the Michigan State Police.
MSP officials say preliminary investigations show Melvindale officers were called to the area for a “suspicious vehicle” and when they tried to make stop the suspect’s car, the driver hit the patrol car head-on.
The suspect’s car had six people inside, according to MSP, and one of them had a gun. Officers fired shots, hitting a 21-year-old man, who was said to be in surgery late Sunday morning.
Authorities did not release any further details about the shooting, including how many shots were fired or how many officers fired.
All the suspects ran from the scene and five were taken into custody, including two adults and three minors. Officials said the car was reported stolen out of Sterling Heights.
The area where the officers found the suspects is a storage area for Ford and GM, and it appears the suspects were breaking into multiple vehicles at the storage unit, MSP officials said.
None of the police officers or members of the public were hurt during the incident.
This investigation remains ongoing and when it’s completed, findings will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office.
