INDEPENDENCE TWP. (WWJ) – An elderly man has died after a two-car crash in Northern Oakland County on Saturday afternoon.

Officials with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office say 72-year-old James Ziegenfelder was driving a 2022 GMC Acadia around 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the time of the crash.

When he tried to turn left out of a restaurant parking lot on Dixie Highway, just north of the Deer Lake Road intersection, his SUV was hit by a Ford Escape.

The sheriff’s office says paramedics took Ziegenfelder to the hospital, where he died from his injuries several hours later.

Another 72-year-old who was the front seat passenger in his GMC was injured in the crash and said to be hospitalized in stable condition Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the Ford, a 54-year-old Holly woman, was treated at the hospital and released, according to the sheriff’s office.

All people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts, according to police.

Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.
