PONTIAC (WWJ) - Authorities say a "medical event" may have been a factor in a fatal crash involving a 52-year-old man from Pontiac.

A 69-year-old Pontiac woman stopped her 2021 Chevrolet Blazer at a red light at the intersection of Auburn Avenue and South Sanford Street around 6 p.m. Friday evening. The man, who was driving a 2023 Dodge Ram, approached the same light from the same direction, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The truck reportedly struck the Blazer before continuing through the intersection. It then left the roadway, hit a crosswalk signal pole and a tree then came to rest in a field.

The man was not wearing a seatbelt. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a factor in the crash. Evidence found during the initial investigation indicated the man may have had a medical event that caused the crash.

The woman driving the Blazer was wearing a seatbelt. She had no reported injuries.

The crash is being investigated by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit.
