DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Southfield man was killed overnight when police say he got out of a vehicle after a crash on the Lodge Freeway.
According to Michigan State Police, this happened at around 2:35 a.m. on Jan. 1, New Year's Day, along the northbound Lodge (M-10) near Webb Street.
MSP said a preliminary investigation found that the driver of a Jeep SUV lost control of her vehicle, hitting the median wall and rolling over.
Police said the passenger in the Jeep, a 28-year-old Southfield man, got out the SUV to get the driver out. While walking to get back into the Jeep, he was then hit by a northbound Chevy Malibu.
Police said the driver of the Malibu did pull over, and is cooperating with investigators.
The passenger of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been notified, police said, but his name has not been released.
No other injuries were reported.
MSP said the investigation is ongoing and an investigators' report will be submitted to the prosecutor's office once it's complete.
“Troopers are investigating the initial cause of first crash as well as the second pedestrian crash," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement. “We want to remind drivers that if they are involved in a crash to stay in their vehicle if possible. If it is not possible to stay in your vehicle, get as far from the travel lanes as possible.”
