(WWJ) – A 75-year-old man who had been reported missing has died after a crash in an I-75 construction zone in Oakland County.
The crash happened around 4:40 a.m. Sunday near Springfield Township as the man was driving south on I-75 near Rattalee Lake Road, according to Michigan State Police.
That section of freeway was closed for weekend construction, according to MSP.
The man, whose name and hometown were not released, is believed to have driven his Volkswagen Tiguan southbound in the closed portion of I-75, through a section of the road that was missing a portion of the concrete, creating about a 1.5-foot drop-off, officials said.
The impact, MSP officials said, was severe enough to cause "substantial vehicle damage and fatal injuries to the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash.
Authorities did not say when the man was first reported missing.
"Our condolences go out to this gentleman's family and friends." MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said.
Shaw said the on-scene investigation has been completed and authorities are now waiting for the medical examiner's report. No other circumstances surrounding the crash have been released.
