STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A deadly crash involving a pedestrian is causing traffic tie ups in Sterling Heights as police investigate what led to the early morning crash on Tuesday.

Sterling Heights Police Lt. Mario Bastianelli confirmed to WWJ's Charlie Langton that a man was hit and killed by an SUV while crossing the street in Macomb County around 6 a.m.

"A pedestrian apparently was crossing Mound Road at about 18 ½ Mile when he was hit by a vehicle," Langton said. "The vehicle did stop and cooperate with police."

Law enforcement have closed Mound Road from 18 Mile northward to conduct their investigation which has caused major congestion in the area.

Police have advised drivers to use alternative routes while they remain on scene.

"At this time, it does not appear to be any drugs or alcohol involved, but still stresses this is an early investigation," Langton added.

Police said the victim, identified as a man in his 30s, was not using a crosswalk— his name has not been released at this time.

The driver of the SUV was arrested, cops added, on outstanding warrants unrelated to the crash.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
