ROME TOWNSHIP (WWJ) State Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in a single-car crash that killed a Hillsdale County man in southern Michigan.
Michigan State Police (MSP) First District said Monroe Post troopers were called to the scene of a one-vehicle injury crash on US 223 Highway near Woerner Road in Rome Township, about 25 miles southeast of Jackson. It happened on Saturday, February 15th, around 7 p.m.
Their preliminary investigation revealed a white Dodge Grand Caravan was traveling east on US 223 when it veered off the road and struck a tree, MSP said in a social media post.
The driver of the Dodge—a 29-year-old Waldron man— died at the scene. The passenger—a 27-year-old Waldron woman— was rushed to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital to be treated for her injuries. No information was given on her condition.
Waldron is a village of about 500 people in Hillsdale County, along the Michigan-Ohio border.
The man’s name was not released.
US 223 near Woerner was shut down for several hours for the investigation. The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department, the Cambridge Police Department, Lenawee Community Ambulance, the Addison Fire Department and Cambridge Fire Department assisted at the scene.
MSP Monroe Post is investigating the crash. At this point, they do believe alcohol contributed to it. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Trooper Ryan Kalnbach at (734) 242-3500.
