(WWJ) A young man has pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the death of his 3-month-old son at a Warren hotel last year.

LaQuan Williams, 21, was staying with the baby and the child's mother at the Days Inn & Suites, where the incident took place in April, 2020, during the initial weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The child was taken to a local hospital where he later died from injuries caused by blunt-force trauma, according to authorities.

The infant was positive COVID-19, officials said, and six responding police officers were forced to be quarantined after also testing positive.

Williams was initially charged with first-degree murder in the case, but will now avoid mandatory life in prison due to his plea.

Back in February, Williams was also among a group of four county jail inmates who beat another inmate suspected of stealing, according to reports. Court records obtained by the Macomb Daily show he was sentenced to time-served, 27 days, and two years probation in that case.

Williams is scheduled to be sentenced on the murder charges on Dec. 1 by Macomb Circuit Judge Edward Servitto. He faces any number of years in prison, up to life.
