MACKINAC ISLAND (WWJ) -- It was a close call for a man who was climbing on cliffs — where he wasn't supposed to be climbing — on Northern Michigan's Mackinac Island over the holiday weekend.
According to the Mackinac Island Fire Department, firefighters jumped into action to rescue the man who had fallen down a cliff, at around 2 p.m. on Sunday, and was losing his grip.
Firefighters went to both the top of the cliff and the base to figure out the easiest and fastest way to rescue the dangling man, amid reports that he was slipping and couldn't hold on much longer.
A firefighter was able to climb up a ladder and grab the man, who was said to be "about ten seconds away from letting go."
The man was turned over to EMS for care, and was last reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities say while climbing on the cliffs of Mackinac is prohibited, this is the second rescue this year and the tenth in the last 15 years.
Those commenting on a social media post detailing the rescue suggested more work should be done to deter people from climbing.
Kristie Lee wrote on Facebook: "Sadly, probably time to implement some hefty fines, cuz it’s going to keep happening," while Nicole Blades opined: "I hope that he is OK, but unfortunately many people don't take these warning signs seriously."
Cheryl Allen-Kuzmanovich commented: "God bless the first responders for rescuing an idiot in a spot he was not supposed to be in."
