FLINT (WWJ) – A Michigan man has been sentenced to jail for allegedly opening fire on a Michigan State Police helicopter on patrol in Flint in October 2021.
David Eugene Cox, 27, was sentenced on Monday to six months in Genesee County Jail followed by two years of probation for charges of carrying a concealed weapon and attempted terrorism, according to a report from MLive.
Cox, who was given credit for having already served 17 days in jail, was also ordered to pay fines and costs. The sentence comes after he took a plea deal last month.
The plea saw charges of assault with intent to murder, terrorism, attempted malicious destruction of police property, and felony firearm dropped, according to the report.
Authorities say Cox and another man, Jeremy Engelman, were arrested for allegedly shooting at Trooper 3, an MSP helicopter that is often on patrol above Flint. On Oct. 2, 2021 the chopper responded to reports of shots fired.
While investigating, Trooper 3 spotted the men on a bridge in the Happy Hollow Nature Area passing a gun back and forth, police said previously. One man fired multiple shots at a creek before handing it to the other man, who pointed the gun at the sky and fired at least five shots at the chopper, according to MLive.
The troopers on board were uninjured and the helicopter was not hit. The troopers were able to guide officers to the suspects and they were arrested.
Engelman was previously given a delayed sentence for his role in the incident, according to MLive.
